Know that i have a main tank will i need to do cycling every time i get a tank or can i:
- Put filter in main tank for a month or two
- Then put it in the new tank
- Put fishies in
If not how come?

Best way is to put the new filter in the your main cycled tank for 4 weeks. It will then cycle to the volume of fish waste you have in there and be ready to use in a new tank. Then you can add the new fish to the new tank without concern of using those fish to cycle with.
