I've just got myself a 3ft tank, got my substrate in and plants along with a heater, air stone and filter. It's been sitting for about a week now and I've just turned on the filter, air stone and heater to get everything going.

My question is...I have a small tank with two goldfish. Can I use the filter foam pads from that filter in my larger filter to help with cycling? Also, can I place the goldfish in the large tank (at the right temp of course) to help with cycling and preparing the tank for the arrival of the tropical fish?

Thanks

The goldfish need the large tank, how many gallons is the other one.
Yes as long as you match temp and ph it will be fine to transfer everything over.

Ah, seems I haven't been clear. Sorry. I'm setting up the 3ft tank for tropical fish. I just happen to have a small goldfish tank (with two small fish) and so was wondering if I can use the goldfish filter media (or even the goldfish themselves) to help with cycling and setting up the tank.

Goldfish are massive waste producers and need large tanks, the first goldfish alone needs 20 gallons, then 10 gallons for every other goldfish added.
I would use the big tank for the goldfish, also they need excellent filters.

What type of goldfish are they?
If you don't want them in the larger tank I would rehome them to a pond.

I've been keeping goldfish for sometime now and they're well. I'm not rehoming them. I simply want to know if their tempory presence in my second (new 3ft) tank will help with cycling the tank. Then I will move them back to their own tank and my new one will be ready for tropical fish.

Will this help.

Yes they will cycle the tank but is it far on the fish, use them and then put them back in the smaller tank.

Sorry meant fair missed the i out.
It up to you but I would rather keep gplfish which I did myself in a biigger tank, I had two fancy goldfish in a 40 gallon.
