Cycling Shortcut... Too Good To Be True

Okay, after 2 weeks cycling and still no nitrite I bit the bullet and bought enough safestart for 2 doses. 100 euro worth!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :X

I,lll let ye all know how it goes .
I'll test later today and post the results here.

Thanks to tigerissey(tina) on another forum for finding bio-spira:

I don't rate the safe start at all, it does not IMO work.

I am in the UK and ordered biospira from America via this web site,

http://fishstoretn.com/bio_spira.html

it came with a cold pack in a foil bubble wrap. The plane bringing it over is cold in the hold, so the package stays cold. It worked for me, within a week I was fully cycled, you don't get high spikes either. Follow instructions on Marinelands web site and it really will work!!!

The cost was not too bad either, $24 total so about 15 pounds.

Okay, last night after 24 hrs with safe-start i finally have nitrite readings:

Day 1: Ammonia 3 nitrite 0 nitrate 0 ph 8.5
Day 11 Ammonia 3 nitrite 0.05 nitrate 0 ph 8
added safe start day 11
Day 12 Ammonia 3 nitrite 0.3 ph 8. Didnt test nitrate.

Seems the safe start is working.
Although i wouldnt say it provides instant cycle, it certainly helps with fishless cycling. I'll continue to post daily readings until its fully cycled. :good:

Honestly the product is a great product to have out if it works properly to speed up a fish cycle as beginners are very unlikely to cycle any other way so this product could be great to allow less fish deaths in beginner tanks...Although claiming the product is a miracle cure is ridiculous....Cancer will be cured before we obtain a working instant cycle product

working instant cycle wouldn't be too hard. Fill a tank with ceramic chunks and use it as a sump filter for all the tank in the store. Throw a uv filter on it to help take care of the disease. Then sell bags full of ceramic chunks to add to your filter. I think something like that could work.

Update on water parameters:

Day 1: Ammonia 3 nitrite 0 nitrate 0 ph 8.5
Day 11 Ammonia 3 nitrite 0.05 nitrate 0 ph 8
added safe start day 11
Day 12 Ammonia 3 nitrite 0.3 ph 8. Didnt test nitrate
Day 13: (monday) Ammonia 1.2; Nitrite 1.2; nitrate 250; pH 9

Working away nicely :good:

Flame, I think he is doing a fishless cycle and using the safestart to see if it speeds it up any. However, if there were fish in the tank, the level of nitrates would be a problem, nessescitating frequent water changes, I think this would then slow the cycle down meaning fish would be exposed to ammonia and nitrite (albeit at lower levels) for longer.

EDIT
Tommo is 9 correct for your pH, that is very high, what were you planning on stocking the tank with and do you have anything in there thatcould have raised the pH, I see it was stable at 8 before.

Oh, i added ammonia to raise the ppm to 3 before i added the safe start. The ammonia will raise the ph. This is what happened when i started the cycle.

My tap water is ph8

Yes, im doing a fishless cycle and using the safe start to speed it up. I had no nitrites before adding the safestart.
