There seems to be a weird thin white skin on top of the water, it's not like thick or anything it's just like weird. It breaks up when disturbed. My other tank water is crystal clear so I have no clue.

Mine had that, i think its maybe declor or something. An airstone sorts it out.

Well im still cycling at the minute. I dont believe it affected the tank at all, just looked bad.

It sort of looked like silver oil floating on the top of the tank.

yea. like milk on the surface.

I blame too much declorinator, but its still harmless i guess.

My ammonia drops, and i believe the nitrites are dropping because the nitrates are rising at a snails pace.

Took me over a month to get to this stage, because i mucked up my first attempt by adding almost 40ml of ammonia ...

I took ages to show signs of things happening. I got a little bit frustrated but just need to stick to the cycling methods.

I managed to get mature media from a forum user and that properly kicked started things. Could you get some mature media from a friend/contact/LFS?

I was going to ask my neibour (sp?) for some, but his tank is yuk!

I have mature media from my 2 year tank but it's not working.

Oh right, might sound daft but..
Did you move the right parts of the media across? Move it across quickly?
