does nutrafin cycle actually do anything, i know it doesn't contain any benificial bacteria but is there any point in using this?

In my experience it does absolutly nothing. I stay away from all chemicals aside from the needed meds every now and then.

Yeah thats the idea, never used it so not sure how effective it is and heard mixed opinions here on the forum. Certainly won't do any harm, the difference of opinion seems to be on how productive it actually is, some say it works, others that it has little or no effect.

I found a thread recently on another forum that had a diary/log from someone that had used it and the results were great. His tests never showed ammonia or nitrite at all and he started with about 12 tetras (neons I think). The key seems to be getting it from a LFS that handles it properly. Apparently it works great IF it has been kept refrigerated per the instructions. According to the thread (I wish I could remember where I saw it), there is a store in Tennessee (I think Knoxville) that is a good source. They were selling so much they were reordering on a weekly basis and shipped it to you with an ice pack to keep it cold. It was pretty expensive at $9.99 for the size for a 30 gallon or smaller tank and $19.99 for the 90 gallon size. I believe Bio Spira is made specifically to be used WITH fish and not as part of a fishless cycle though.
