okay. iv got an outbreak of Cyanobacteria in my tank at the moment

spec's:

3.2 wpg of T5 light
doesing liquid ferts (EI system, 10ml of diluted salts a day maco one day mico the other)
dosing liquid carbon (1ml /day)
CO2 injection via yeast system
fluval 105 filter (not cycled)

there is no fish only plants in the tank.

is there any house hold agent which will kill the Cyanobacteria? but not the plants? any advice on how to get rid of it before it kills my HC

Treatment called Aerocol

It seems a bit of a gimmick but it works incredibly well!

You get 10 tablets per pack and you just drop them in, i think a pack did 600 liters or something like that. I have used Mycosidol which is the marine version for the red cyanobacteria.

No conventional algae treatments will kill it, loads claim to like ESHA Protalon... but they dont work and most likely because it isnt an algae but a bacteria.

I thought the colombo treatments a bit naff looking but found they work really well, personally, Mycosidol and Aerocol are two of the best products and most usefull that i have seen come on the market in years!

thank you :good: although i dont really want to spend a lot on treatment do you know any house hold things which can kill it off? without killing the plants in there

Nope. You got an aquatic problem... you use an aquatics treatment. Not many types on the market so they can ask what they want. You can buy similar products for pond water features but will kill plants and fish so not much help....

If you're desperate Google treating algae with Hydrogen Peroxide.

I wouldn't do it, but tons of pros out there endorsing its use.

I used Maracyn, and have not had a problem since.

Five day black-out worked for me. No chemicals either. I syphoned up all I could, added an air stone and then wrapped the tank in aluminum cooking foil to ensure no light got in. My plants recovered fine when the lights went back on.

From what I've read it doesn't always work, but it's easy enough to try before anything else.

thanks cathy i might try that. altho im worryed about the plants dieing the HC which im trying to save has been grown out of the water. so it needs to adapt to the tank  i might try a black out

Maracyn or Erythromycin both work really well for me.

Both are not available without prescription in the UK (where the OP is) as they are powerful antibiotics. Overuse of antibiotics is what has led to the development of resistant strains of bacteria, hence the restrictions on sale.
