Ok, well first off.. my new reef tank is a little over a year old. I've had a reef tank before but never went through any of the problems I am facing now. Just about after the 1 year mark on my tank, I got a break out of cyano. I've been doing water changes every week, and have adjusted the powerheads in my tank so that there is more flow to the bottem of my tank. I have a DSB.. but so far, nothing has helped. I syphon off as much as I can, do another water change, only to have the cyano come back again. I do use RO/DI water with every water change. I can't figure out for the life of me how to get rid of the cyano. I'm thinking about moving some of the rock around to get an even better flow to the bottem.

Anyways, I get home from work last night to find out one of my fish now has what seems to me is popeye. The fish has been in my tank for about a year now. I've read that using Maracyn will not only help with the popeye, but will help with the cyano as well. Any ideas?

ahhh I have been through part of this before. I was warned and I am glad I was about using maracyn in a salt tank. I did what you did and I move my powerheads around. the main part is you have to get rid of the phosphates first. I bought a phosphate filter for red and hair algae from petsolutions. it is 11.99 and it came with a sample of chemi clean which is a powder substance to get righ of the red algae. the filter pad brings down your phosphates and the chemi clean gets rid of your existing red algae problem. your new water movement should help keep it away. good luck

Cyano is a bacteria and it loves nitrates or phosphates. Remove phosphates for sure and try to reduce Nitrates too.

You should see a difference in the CYano then.

If this doesnt work then there are chemical treatments but its pointless recomending these whilst the underlying problem still exsists.

Well after getting home from work last night, I syphoned off all of the cyano I could get, topped off the water and waited. Seems it did a bit better this time around. My skimmer was filling up with all kinds of gunk. As of this morning, the sand bed still looked good. My fish's eye looked a bit better last night as well. But I was thinking I might have to try the maracyn as he has a bit of fin & tail rot.
I think when I do my weekly water change this weekend, I'm going to add another powerhead in there.

Stop feeding for a few days the cyano will die out, when you feed make sure that there is no left over food. Now dont let pop eye go untreaded he will lose the eye. Get some tetracycline in the tank right away.

The cyano is finally gone. Thanks to you guys, and a bit of work. Added a new pump to get the dead spots out. And added some meds to help get rid of my fishes popeye. All is good and my sand bed is white again. Thanks to all who helped.
