Was wondering if there is any significant disadvantages to leaving chunks of cumcumber in your tank for the fish to nibble on (i do this about once per week now)

I have started adding it to both my Malawi tank and my American / Mixed Cichlid tank (67 g /300 litre tanks) The latter tank is the one with about 5x Bristlenose so i put extra cucumber in this one.

I tend to chop up (skin off) into very small bits and feed like flakes and also stick about 3-4 lumps (skin off) about 3cm in diameter and 1-2 cm thick under rocks to hold them down. My fish (especially the convicts and Bristlenose in one tank and the yellow labs in the other tank then nibble over the course of the next 24 hours until its gone)

I guess with cucumber being about 97% water or something, it doesn't make any difference to water quality having bits lying around for a day or two?

Also thinking about doing the same thing with courgette or tomato? what do you think?

My other fish sharing these tanks are; mbuna, a few Haps, couple of Peacock, Pictus, Syno, Jade Eye Cichlid, Parrot, Kribensis

Well i feed my plecos cucumber and they like it. Well its better to try some different diet.

i also do this and when i walk in to a few of my lfs they also do this, i have never noiticed any differences in my readings. seems to be pretty safe, you can also add your cucumber with the skin on to the tank just slice through the middle and weight it down :good: , your BN will absolutly love it :good:

Spinach, sproats, broc, and peas my fish like the best.
Cucumber mine can't stand it.

thanks for the link Wilder, so it seems to advocate that leaving cucumber in my tank isnt really an issue? although it doesnt SPECIFICALLY say that....

my BN love the cucumber, i have to make sure i put 5 bits in though for the x5 BN as they refuse to share!!!! Like kids with their favourite toy LOL

need to try other vegetable matter,

and guess what! My convicts (out of all my fish except the BN and that includes Mbuna) are the ones that love cucmber the best!!!

Yes they will love it livebearers need veg it will fetch there colours out more.

i have found the best thing is to cut a large bit of cucumber with the skin off and fit a stone in the middle of it and then plop it into tank so it sinks

My fish seem to prefer courgette over cucumber but will eat both, the plecs love the skin too.

I have also tried carrot, but it was probably a bit tough as I didn't boil it long enough.

Arfie
