I went to my LFS a week ago and saw this sick, what looked like a Red Turquoise Discus in a 5 gal. tank. It was soo messy and dirty in the tank, it almost made me cry! There were about 25-30 black neons in with it and a few ghost shrimp. It had nearly lost all color and had a few ich spots. I wanted to rescue it, but I know I have to room for it....

Ever had anything like this happen to you?

One too many times actually.

My local LFS is not the best when it comes to caring for their fish. They have great prices on all the hardware, but their fish are atrocious. They came in with a shipment of the finest angelfish I had ever seen! Their were wild types, gold angels, platinum angels, half blacks and so on. The price was great too, $15 a pop, for a 4 inch angel that would probably grow up to be a great parent. I knew I had to save my pennies, and I did. About a week later I come back in and I ask about the angels. They say they've only sold four. My was my heart jumping for joy! I rushed over to the angelfish and my heart was brutally pounded down. I saw why they only sold four. 2 fish were dead, the rest diseased and they were in a tank with tiger barbs. TIGER BARBS, the infamous fin-nippers! I knew in the back of my head that I wanted these fish, but impulse buying was conquered, and logic told me that bringing these fish home would only bring trouble. However, this isn't uncommon there. They had a shipment of electric blue rams one time, I bought 2 fish that looked like a breeding pair. Both died within days of me bringing them home from ich. I brought the dead fish back in for a refund, and saw that all the other rams had the same disease. They have made changes since these occurrences now, and are a much better business, but I've only bought 1 or 2 fish from them since.

Wow, I have never been to a pet shop and seen anything like this.... The pet stores ive been to just have specie only tanks, but they are a bit overcrowded, but they have no really expensive fish.
It does sound very sad :/

Too many times, though don't think any of them are as bad as seeing a Discus in a 5g :(

One place I went to had a little clown knife in with african cichlids, almost all of it's tail had been chewed off and it was hiding in the corner under the filter outflow thing as there was no where else to hide.

There were 2 in the 5 gal in the first place, then one disappeared....Waaa!

Almost, if not all the LFS's I have seen have none of these problems. I fail to understand how a shop that keeps fish in poor conditions could survive more than a year -- enough time for all the local fishkeepers to come along and decide they are not going to put any of these fish in their tanks. What keeps poor fish-keeping shops open? Is it that they are catering to people who have no idea what well-kept fish look like? I don't know, it just baffles me.

The discus is 49.99, and now (beside some dead bodies :( ) is the only fish in the tank. I doubt it will a buyer.
