I have a 5.5 gallon planted tank. Already cycled. 25' C, with a small box filter. I want to keep a single interesting fish in here, and was wondering if there was a species of cichlid that would be suitable. I'll eventually get a betta if I can't think of anything more interesting. thanks for all your help. :)

Not really, 5.5G is really small and IMPO a betta or a shrimp colony are your two best options.

African multis might work, But these are shelldwellers who are used to rocky/sandy setups and would benefit from at least a 10G

i agree also, u could keep a betta and a cuple shrimp in there, like say 1 betta and 3ish shrimp. 2 small 4 other fish. but (now im promoting my fav fish) u could keep a mosquito fish in there!!! theyre VERY hardy fish, take mostly any food, and theyre really cheap in stores cuz theyre sold as feeder fish. heres a link to their Aquarium Wiki Page, that i helped edit, might i add. they look dull, but theyre VERY interesting. Good Luck! -heart  , ally86ozzy
