My Balloon Molly is on her last legs and I want to put her out of her misery. I have no clove oil and couldn't face beheading her or hitting her with a hammer. Is there another humane way of doing it? I'm thinking maybe a strong spirit or something as that is anestheasic?

Hope someone is around to help.

Cheers

Best way for me is a coldwater with ice cubes, if done right takes about 20 seconds.
Used vodka and it took far to long.

How big is the Molly?

Any fish between 1" and 4" i really advise slamming hard on a hard floor, i use my bathroom floor which is concrete (really hard slam), other options for below 1" and above 4" for me, but wont go into it now.

peeps gonna get excited perhaps now and come after me, but for me, the BEST way to put a fish down is the QUICKEST way,

No disrespect Wilder, 20 seconds is a bit too long for me,

This is a tricky subject so many different views, i feel much more uncomfortable watching a fish for 20 secs in Ice than i would netting it, putting it in my hand and slamming it down hard, but thats me.....

done it a few times when needed, never seen a fish's gills move or any signs of life or movement once they hit the floor, and i always check, just to satisfy myself, i watch the fish for about 1-2 mins, then wrap up in paper and dispose. I can here peeps think "they might start moving after 2 mins or 3 mins" well i done my fair share fo checking fish on and off for up to 20 mins, never had a sign of life after a good slam

i dont expect you to go and do this now, but also, a lot of the time its not a quesiton of the fish's suffering but more what the owner is comfortable doing, atleast you honest and say you might not be able to face certain methods of killing, fair play.

However, some peeps hide behind the "i couldnt bash my fish its so barbaric" when really they saying "its makes me feel uncomfortable" i can respect that, but they should call it how it is, THEIR discomfort.

Best Wishes, you obviously care or you wouldnt be asking

EDIT: wanted to end on a positive note :good:

I have found the quickest way is using freezing water. I take some water and put it in a container in the freezer. Once it has formed a layer of ice on the top( about 1/2 cm thick) I break through it and dip the fish in using a net. Their system can't take the shock from the temperature drop and they are gone within 3-5 seconds.

Thanks for your replies.
After Mattsters reply I couldn't get back into the forums for some reason!
I did a quick google and came up with this link and went with the alcohol thing.

I put her in the vodka and her fins did move for a few seconds. I would guess 5-8 secs or thereabouts. I'm hoping that she was anesthetised as she went.

You're right fry-lover, it was me that couldn't handle the brutal way of doing it as much as I appreciate it is a humane way.
The Molly was about 1 1/2" by the way.

Thanks again for your replies

really glad to hear you got your "humane" term the right way round LOL, sometimes people get confused, claiming killing a fish instantly with a blow to the head is not "humane" and "too violent", its acutally humane for the fish as its dead immediately.

I've heard that a few pet stores and vets recommend using baking soda in water. I've personally never used it as I don't have the stomach to put something down, I always think there's at least a slim chance that a miracle could happen and the fish could make a recovery.

Reminds me of when we went to a trout farm with friends of ours. His kids used rods to catch the trout and as they caught them he culled them. The first thing they said as he was about to bludgeon the first one was..."don't hit it too hard dad"!

:hyper: LOL, good story and it makes the point well!!!

my definition i like of "humane" got it on Google marked or motivated by concern with the alleviation of suffering

i used a really sharp pair of scisors and quickly cut off the head, the gills and the fish stopped moving, to satisfy me (not because im violent, its just i didnt want it to suffer), i cut the head a few more times. I hate the after death twitch....

i personally get a cup of really hot water and the fish is lifeless within seconds not even that and they dont suffer long at all. thats just the way im comfortable doing it.i dont like to kill fish if i dont absolutly have to.

I don't know what is the right or wrong way, but I could not face bashing a fish to death even if it is the quickest way. A local vet whose hobby is fishing (I find this odd personally) once offered to euthanise a fish for me in this way but I decided on clove oil instead.

I have read that the brain stays alive for a while even when the fish looks dead, which is why I keep a dead fish in a bowl of tank water for a day after apparent death before I bury it. Might be silly, but at least I know that when I bury the fish it is really dead.

I can only face killing a fish with Koi Calm overdosing or clove oil from the chemist - anything else apart from the quick slam sounds dodgy to me.

Sorry to hear about your poor molly

ive always used a sheet of damp newpaper, wrap the fish in it,put it in the freezer and leave it there for a few mins, always worked for me
