I would say maybe not, its predator, so would depend on what sort of tropicals you would want to keep it with. Also water parameters would be an issue too, most africans like hard water, I know these do.
Most fish will do better in their preferred water, which is the water type that they are made to live in. So many fish are tank raised that they can live in almost anything. Don't be surprised if you end up with issues though. Remember to acclimate the fish if it's going through a big hardness change in different waters. Different freshwater fish have different difficulties in switching water w/out acclimation so I reccommend it. My fish store keeps their africans above ph 8.0 and their other freshwater is around 7.0.
I wouldn't say no confrontation. They are Africans and aren't meant to be with the average fish
All in all, it could be alright and it could be a big mistake. I know it's highly thought of as a HUGE no no to mix like that.
