Cory With A Split Fin

As the title says, I've noticed one of my cories has a split fin, the one on his back (I don't know the name, I'm not fluent in fish anatomy). He seems perfectly active and normal otherwise. The only other creatures in my tank are some cardinal tetra, a bamboo shrimp and some apple snails. I've not noticed any signs of aggression in my tank (though I've not been home much these last few days so it's possible I missed something I guess).

Do I need to take any action, or will it just heal on its own?

Just keep an eye on it. He may have gotten a little snag. Monitor it though, to make sure it doesn't get infected, but other than that, keep up on your water changes. Clean water is the best medication

Increase your water changes. If you normally do water changes weekly of 30%, do some daily water changes of 20%. It sounds like a lot of work, but it really isn't, especially with cories. Cories and other scaleless fish are very sensitive to meds, so it is far better to be proactive now and keep the water as clean as absolutely possible so that the fish can heal on its own rather than allow a bacterial infection to take hold and complicate things! Water changes are truly the absolute best medicine for your fish. They have very good immune systems when they are not stressed. But, when they are stressed from poor water conditions they are susceptible to all sorts of pathogens. Lean to the side of doing too many water changes rather than doing too few. Lean on the side of changing too much water rather than too little. If you are going to make a mistake regarding maintenance, it is far better to err on that side than the other side.


The cory should be fine. Just give it clean water and it will take care of the rest.
