I call myself a "newbie" but I still haven't bought my first tank!!! I am dithering like mad over which to buy. I know I want around 180 litres, freshwater, tropical with live plants but, as I have no experience, am depending on advice to try to get the right tank for me. I have seen a Juwel corner tank, Trigon, I think, but more expensive than I really wanted but could push to it if necessary. I just wondered if anyone had any opinions on corner tanks? Is there any downsides to them? Thanking you all in anticipation.

Biggest tank you can fit/afford.

Corner tanks give a slightly odd perspective at times, and are less useful for territory against the long tanks if you go for fish that need their turf.
They occasionally lack cupboard space as well because of the way the stand works.

On the positive side they fit a lot of water into a relatively unobtrusive footprint.

Thank you DrRob. I hope to have mainly guppies, neon tetras and rams, do any of those have territory needs?

The rams do, but they're not too problematical. Depends how many you want really.

Rams, the blue ones, I think they are called German Rams, I would like 4 but I need to know if they are OK in a small group or are they better as just 1 couple? Really I will get however many you experts say they are happiest with.

I have the same tank, scaping them can be a bit of a chew as well, just needs a bit more thought that's all, someone on here has a scaped one and its stunning, will see if I can find the link again.

They are a nice size though.

Regards
Jack

I have a juwel vision 180 and I really like it, there are always going second hand online if you wanted to cut your costs abit ;-)

Also if you were to get German blue rams, I would wait a good 3-4 months after you have cycled and added your other fish as they are extremely sensitive to water conditions, they should be fine as 4, try to only get one male tho and lots of hiding places/ territory, mine disagreed with my dwarf gourami over territory ;-)

Thank you Sophie + Laurac94, I really think I will get the Juwel as everything seems to be included, which is a real bonus to me. Also, love the fact that
all the bits and bobs hidden away in the black box

Good advice on the rams, that will be what I get then.

Thanks everyone!

A lot of people actually take out the black box and replace it with an external filter. They are rather large black boxes to have within the tank.

Yeah I don't have one on mine, I have an all pond solutions ex2000 and it keeps it crystal clear. They are currently on sale I think on the website or £80 if not. The ones with the uv filter are £15 more I think, I would highly recommend them.

Yes the first thing I did with my 260 Vision was rip the internal out, replaced with a Fluval 406. The same with my Roma 200, put in the Fluval FX6.
Externals over internals anyday!
