if the fans are pointed directly onto the water it will increase your evap rate. quick solution in an emergency, if you keep a couple frozen bottle of water in the freezer and float it in the tank when the temp rises.

While this is a decent emergency measure, just remember, the volume of ice required to chill the tank by 1 degree C can become outrageous on bigger tanks. Our tanks are phenomenal heat sinks which often QUICKLY out-pace the ability of a little frozen water bottle to keep them cool . The numbers are quite staggering, so do your best to provide chilling with fans and a chiller and only use ice as a last desperate resort.

So yer chiller be best? will it get really that hot in my room even if i put fans near the chiller?

Im getting my setup in the summer when it will be apparantley very warm. This may sound stupid but how does the chiller actually work because isnt it set outside of the tank?

A chiller is essentially a refrigeration unit. It operatets in the same way by colling down the water flowing through it and putting that heat into the room.

Chillers are good, but cost a lot of money for any fair sized tank. Don't forget other ways to cool the tank, such as shorter photoperiods.

Agreed, aquarium chillers are not the most efficient pieces of engineering out there :(. A big part of the problem is that their heat exchangers cannot be made of copper and instead have to be either expensive exotic metals or in-efficient synthetics. If you ask me, the best option is to use a window mount air conditioner to keep the room cool and dry and use fans to cool the tank. In the end you won't spend any more money on electricity and both you and the fish will be comfortable.

when its hot like last summer i bought an air conditioning unit that u put freezer pack things in (much cheaper then the other types). i placed it sought of near my tank so the cold air blow around the tank. worked a treat plus it kept the room cool for me which is a nice bonus

Well its mainly cos my work can get me in a 250 liter chiller for only 300 quid :D saving me 250 quid! But i was thinking about a portable A/C from argos they only cost 160 quid here is the link...

only worry was legionairs disease? I cant spell it but yer would that be a issue.
Also how to keep one running then?

Get the room A/C, cheaper unit, cheaper to run, keep you cool too

ive never seen this season changing temperature a problem. I live in south florida where it does actually change alot. Today is cold and windy around 75 degrees when yesterday was 87 degrees. what i got to keep my tank cool is my regular house A/C! i dont see no need for chillers, and fans to me are only good for MH lighting systems.

flash

Well the other issue is running costs.

The chiller runs on 200 or 320 watts cant remember but the AC dont say only 9k BTU or is that 9 kilo watts?

wouldn't worry over legionairres it'll only occur in near enough stagnant water between the temps of 20oC and 45oC (I think)

I actually nearly went into water management as a career, inspecting properties to ensure they're systems are all set up properly to avoid legionnaires. can't rememebr all the info off the top of my head but i've a copy of L8 which is the regulations appliances have to adhere to and how legionairres disease is spread nad can be controlled. Can dig it out and research if your really worried.
