Hi there....

If your planning on breeding cons. theres a couple things you should know. 1) Convicts are aggressive fish...more so when spawning. Nothing else should be kept in the same tank (IMO) as them unless it is a large tank with other agressive fish. 2) You should have a way to seperate them once they do spawn. I always have to with my pair as the male becomes crazed. A tank divider or a spare 10 gal would do nice. 3) Convicts will have a group of new fry every 3-4 weeks ...ive seen mine pump out some every two weeks..What do you plan to do with your new fry? I use mine as feeders. What size tank do you have them in...are they with other fish?
Anyways...hope i helped :)

hi

im gona use some as feeder fish also im no som peeps hoo want some

there in a 15 gallon at the mo but im gettin them a bigger tank very soon there about 3 inch but 1 is bout 2inch

how can u tell if there male or female????

thanx

while cons aren't the up there on the most agressive cichlid chart they are protective of their eggs/fry when breeding, and if you have 2 that have paired off they are going to persue the cast out till it is dead of very hurt.

while it isn't that hard for any fish to torture an oscar there are way more agressive cichlids than cons when it comes to protecting fry.

yes have to agree but cons. could cause alot more damage and protect a "tank" more than a nest ...... rams (which are relatively small) will actually attk fish around there eggs they are just as if not more aggresive but my advice is if u breed u need OWN tank for them

You dont have to wait till Convicts pair up to see who is male and female, its really really easy, the female will have orange/red glitter like on her belly and the male wont, if you want to see a male and female look in my gallery near the last pages there is a female in there.

Ive heard of full grown cons breeding that took out someones 13" oscar
I can easily belive an oscar as I said before but I bet if it were a midas in that tank the cons wouldnt be a pair anymore thats for sure.

Oscars might not be the most powerful cichlids but i would have to see a pair of convicts beat up an oscar to belive it.
My midas ripped apart my female and male convict pair because the stood upto him.

rams as aggressive as convicts? I don't think so. I own both. One of my cons is not that aggressive, actually, but the other will kill anything and everything that gets in his path...and he doesn't even have a mate. He's just plain mean. He actually got my common pleco into a fight...and plecos don't seem to fight that often. But don't get me wrong, I love my convicts. I think they're awesome (especially the non-aggressive one...I love him as much if not more than my rams).

Good luck with the cons! They'll certianly provide plenty of feeders for you :)
