My two convicts just out of the blue started bolting at their 4 week old fry today and it looked as if they were attempting or were eating them. Then 30 minutes later and about 10 less fry later they just stopped. Why did they do this and will they do it again? I tried to stop them by tapping on the glass but they wouldnt stop. :-(

They are getting ready to breed again. They only care for the young for about a month and then usually try to lay eggs again. If they do lay eggs they will eat or kill all of the other fry. The young need to be separated if you want to keep any of them.

well i dont have another place for them atm so i guess they will just have to be eaten +(... or i could fill up a tub in the garage and de-clorinate the water and put em in there and hope for the best?

I saw in another thread that you only have them in a 10 gal which is probably another one of your problems. Convicts need plenty of space to swim as well as hiding spots. I would say a 20 gal at the very least might be ok for the 2 parents then put the fry into the 10. I would start looking for somewhere to get rid of the fry when they mature as well.

these are in a 42g, but i have others in a 10g, and they are fine, you are wrong

Convicts should not be kept in 10g tanks.. if they are like 1/2'' long, they may be fine for awhile, but in the end you're going to have dead convicts..

Parents often eat their fry.. if you had another tank to move one of the parents to, you might have better luck.

Cons should look after there babys for months, they dont stop untill the fry leave them.

if they started eating them its because they felt threatened so tapping on the glass wouldnt of helped.

if these cons are in a 42, what else is in there with them?

Add another fish so the parents have something to protect the babies from. That promotes the bonding between parents and also between the parents and young. (and incase you're wondering, no, nothing will get close to the babies. Not with cons which other than festae are probably the best parents in the cichlid world. It might be too late for this batch but try it with the next one. Like danios or something. Only nightime will be tricky for the parents)

You shouldn't be rude to people trying to help you out though. Noone can answer with 100% certainty as to why. There's way too many variables in the fish world for that. They're just trying to help you.

You really shouldn't act this way when people are trying to help you..

Do you think anyone is going to want to help you next time you have a question or problem?

I highly doubt it.
