Hi everyone, new here.

I've had salty tank for about 6 years now and I'm all but done.

Just wondered if anyone out there had converted from salt to tropical, or is it usually the other way round?

I haven't ever kept a marine tank but I'd think it would be an easy transition for a saltwater hobbyist to switch to keeping freshwater. You'd have most if not all of the needed skills and I would think a significant amount of the equipment could be re-used. It would be important not to assume the skills and habits are the same but surely they'd seem very familiar once you'd confirmed them.

Anyway, welcome to TFF and I hope you find some fellow travelers,

Be prepared to be bored by the lack of colour and reduced range of fish types.

Why not go marine oddball? There's always a unique fish to keep, be it scorpionfish, frogfish or eel (or sharks and rays if you have the tank size).

I'm using my old 55g reef tank as a freshwater planted tank now. Got the same lights, and I'm running one of my old marine powerheads in it too (just ran it in a bucket of acidic water for a couple of days to get rid of all the encrusted stuff).

Heavily planted tanks are similar to reef tanks in a way: the entire tank is (hopefully) beautiful and interesting, not just a home for fish. I'm also rather liking the fact that things cost a lot less on the FW side.
