Can I put the following in a 55 gallon tank; complete with a strong filter and frequent water changes:

1 Oscar
1 Green Terror
1 Common Plec
1 Jack Dempsey

EDIT: No need for long and fancy paragraphs. Just a bluntly put yes or no will do for me

Can you? Sure. Should you? No. Not enough territory for the cichlids in a tank that size.

an oscar or a common pleco would be too big for a 55. you could have a jd or a gt in there but not much else if anything

in my 55gal
i put
-a oscar
-green terror
-convict
- jaguar cichlid(mistaken for a convict)
-common plec

all but the oscar are doing great(oscar died) i just have a lot of hiding places but also have a large open swimming space. I've also noticed that keepin the room dark limits the violence between fish. Have had the tank for a year

Really!? :hyper: Is that a glimmer of hope I see who's name is "Pimp"? Hmmm, maybe I should try that out. :sly: I'll have to leave out the Oscar but you know, you can't have ecerything.... :)

I have an oscar & a common in a 72 gallon. I've found the opposite of Pimp, if I leave the room totally dark at night mayhem ensues. I'll find a good gallon of water splashed out in the morning, with either an oscar with missing scales & scrapes, or a plec with torn up fins. Luckily I have a basement light above the tank on a dimmer, leave it on about 1/4 of the way, and they only pull this about twice a month. They also tear off filter intakes, and try to shove the spray bar out of the tank.

These are rather large fish, 10" oscar, 15" plec. The only decorations are a large river gravel for a substrate, and a few silk plants. I had to pull out all the driftwood, they smash it against the side of the tank while skirmishing. I couldn't imagine a gt & a dempsey in the mix.

The oscar is the instigator, he spits gravel at the plec, the plec really doesn't like this, and does a bull charge at the oscar.

Wow....ok, maybe a oscar is not for me then.....

Not reccomended

I would forget the jaguar cichlid

how about looking at slightly smaller cichlids such as Firemouths, Convicts or Blue Acaras, IMO Blue Acaras are a much nicer fish than the green Terror but can be just as stunning if not more. with these you would also easily be able to add a pair of smaller plecs such as bristlenose

Definately forget the jag, way to big and agro for a 55, a single GT maybe, a pair of JDs maybe.
These are big fish you're talking about, they need alot of space, a 55 may look big, but its so narrow.
