Confused?

It is entirely feasible. I do my own clones but have lots of tanks that I can draw from, right in my fish room.

ok,donot quite understand how this works, could someone explain ...cloning????
the filter i have is INTERPET power filter PF2

is this the information you guys need???

I have no idea the design of anything made by Interpet since they are not available here. The basics to a clone are easy. You take some material from a filter that will fit into your filter and just stick it in wherever it will go. because it already has some of the right bacteria growing on it, it can process some ammonia right away. If you don't start out trying to put too many fish in right away, the bit of filter that you have can handle the load while it infects the rest of your media with more of the right bacteria. I like to do a clone and then test it with ammonia before adding fish but as BecciMac said, some people will trust that they have enough from the start and just start stocking with fish.

Sorry if im being thick
so i remove the filter thats inside my fliter now and replace with the matured one
and just turn filter back on

or

do iplace the matured filter in the tank???

im felling a bit dump stupid and nieve here

You put the filter media inside your filter in place of the sponge or whatever is already in there.

I wouldn't trust media donation by post. I used a bit of mature media to speed up my cycle - I drove it half an hour from my friends house. It sped up the cycle (I hadn't seen any change until I put it in) But it's still taken a couple of weeks to cycle (I'm nearly there now)

The bacteria dies off at a fast rate out of the tank, the time it would take to post would kill off most of the bacteria.

You take the donated material and place it into the filter flow in the best way that you can fit it in. You try to leave all, or almost all, of your own filter materials in place so that the clone can populate the filter material in your new filter.

:good:
right think i understand
so i would take out the plain foam in the filter (white one) replace with the new matured filter
leave the black carbon on alone

think i understand a bit better
then turn filter back on
draws water though .. good guy bacteria flood into tank

or am i stupider than i think ....
hope not

thanks every body for your advise tonight
i drop back in after work tomorrow
have great evening

Morning,
Yep spot on. Except the bacteria doesn't go into the tank, it stays on the sponge, but thats a small insignificant detail!
All you are doing by cycling from scratch is trying to build bacteria on the filter sponge.
So add filter sponge that is already covered in bacteria from another tank is instant-gettit!!

So in really really simple terms;
-Turn off your filter and open it
-Take your donated filter sponge covered in gunk and shove it in the filter next to/on top of/along side what is already in there. Just shove it in somehow! If you have to cut off a bit of the original sponge fine, but this isnt an art class, just bodge it!
-Put your filter back together and put back in the tank and turn on
-Bingo, cycled tank. Add 2 small fish immediatley to ensure the filter is kept alive (Id add 2 mollys as they are very hardy fish)
-Check water using test kit every few days, do water changes as ness.
-Add fish!

Quick side note. You can remove the activated carbon from the filter if you want space for a mature sponge. It's only really useful for removing meds. Other than that, filter cloning is excellent, just make sure the donor media is kept wet till it enters your tank.

Molly's are quite big for a 60l. I'd try platties or guppies. Same family as the mollies, but smaller. I kept guppies first and they're great little fish.

Thanks guy for your help

Ok gone out bought my ammonia
how much should i add to my tank
tanks 65L
use this calculator here http://www.fishforums.net/aquarium-calculator.htm
its about 3.4ml for 5ppm of ammnoia in 65L

so i just add 3.4ml of ammonia tonight and wait till my test kit turns up and lets see,
