ok bought a new tank to replace my fry tank that the electrics went a lil mad on, i need to transfer 2 adult molies and 2 platty fry into it, i thought it was the same filter but was mistaken, if i transfer my water plants ornaments etc over will i be able to transfer the fish straight into it or will it go through a cycle agian?

Even if the filter is different, you should be able to transfer the media from the old to new filter. What type of media are you using?

With just the gravel, ornaments etc you will go through a cycle again.

the tank the fry are in at the moment just has a really basic carbon filter with a filter sponge on top, the newer tank seems alot more compicated, if i didnt have such young fry that would get eaten id transfer them into the main tank for safekeeping until it had sorted i suoopse i could try n do a makeshift job n see if i can get my filter sponge into the new filter, would that work? as offered filter starter but seen as though i had 2 mature tanksready set up i thought id be ok.

Definately take the sponge out of the old filter and cram it into the new one (sponge is flexible so you can make it fit). Most filters you can put whatever media you want into them. If you have other mature tanks and there is still room in the new filter, you could also take a bit of filter media from them and shove it in the new filter. As long as the media is kept wet and doesn;'t come in contact with chlorinated water the bacteria should survive.

Btw, is there a reason you can't just move the old filter into the new tank? Is there an electrical problem with the old filter? What do you mean when you say the electrics went a little mad?

the lighting is attatched to the hood and blew but melted through the plastic on the lid everytime its plugged in it smells a little nasty, and the old filter is attatched to the hood too and is different to the filter on the new tank sadly, so theres no way i could get i to work in the new tank. might just let the new tank cycle but feel mean leaving the poor fish in total darkness for even longer plus the wiring sticks out now as my dad attempted to fix it and just made it even worse.
