While it's fine to use pH as a guide line...don't obsess too much about pH. Most fish can thrive in a pH that is not in their "suitable" range...they just might not be as colorful or breed. All too often people start stressing about adjusting their pH values for that one fish they really want. It's far healthier for the fish to be in a stable pH than a fluctuating one brought on by someone trying to bring the pH up or down.
