My blue ram just died :-(
The water conditions probably weren't in its preference. They like the water much warmer than other fish, and the pH 7 or lower. What were the conditions in that tank? Blue rams are fragile fragile.

Ph of 6.8 temp was 28C I nitrate 0 N Ite 0 amm 0 DH 4D and KH was quite low 4got exact standard but ya theyv actually bred quite alot

Huh. That's odd, then. Your firemouths are in the same tank? Are you sure they're as peaceful as you think they are? My firemouth used to bully my bolivians all the time, and he was still juvenile too. Their bullying is less of an offense as other cichlids, but that doesn't make it harmless.

Truth is my firemouths used to bully my old bolivian, the blue rams are tiny and the strangest part is that no female fish has died in that tank so far, I had 3 blue rams, they bred then the blue male started acting strange (exactly like this time) then he died.it is the strangest phenominin and it only appears in my males? Why on earth, my 2 females aree the happiest fish alive and my firemouths just swim around together. My friend, who is an excelent fish keeper, has offered to keep my firemouths. I had to do a lot of thinking about that and I eventually decided on it so I can get discus, but there wasn't any thing strange on their bodies, just normal colours but bad symptoms

Keep in mind discus are not a fish I'd recommend to beginners. Very sensitive fish, not to mention expensive. Keep that in mind before you go after them.

Glad your firemouths will have a new home. They're not really a good choice for you considering the fish you seem to like.

to tell the truth im just new to this forum, i have actually been keeping fish for 3 yrs  and discus is one of the few fish i (havn't and) would like to experiment :) im no expert but i am quite good with cihlids :fun: im not saying i can do it just hoping thats enough, I ask aaalllot of questions to double check though so here are a couple, discus like PH of 6.8? or not and do they like 27 degrees C (please correct me if i say something incorrect) with soft water, im doing a 50 50 mix of RO water im thinking that might be too much so i havent done it yet. oh and geuss what!!! :D
My LFS let me work there (not 4 munny cuz im only 12) but i get a 40% off discount! that takes the price load off B-)
btw do they ever cost more then $26? if yes i wont be able to get much and if they are that much not much either if they are less WOOHOO :X im really really excited, so far I just have to say THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for the info

They cost around 60 dollars each. I've never seen them less than that. At least not healthy ones. They like to school, and they like their temperature more like 86 degrees F, not 79. You'll need bog wood in the aquarium to keep the pH down. Do 50% water changes a week, or it's better to do smaller 10-20% water changes every other day.

Considering what I've seen in this thread, you wanting to keep firemouths with either discus or angelfish, and then wanting 3 jack dempseys in 1 tank, and wanting discus in a 100 liter tall aquarium, I don't think you're ready yet.

Also, normal fish stores don't supply discus because of the poor water conditions in the stores and the specialized care they need. The fish are expensive and not good to be sold in bulk to the common people. Especially if the stores have a return policy on dead fish, they'd be losing money on fish that were taken home to unsuitable water conditions.

If your store sells them at 26 dollars each, I'd be worried about their condition.

Oh no they don't sell them that cheap. I will get discus oh btw I'm not keeping all those I'm giving my firemouths to my friend keeping blue rams and getting discus. Price is very expensive my discount takes off a lot, with a price that high imm looking at 3

I can get them to order me a couple

I keep my breeding pair of firemouths with 2 angels and blue rams, and never had any trouble!

Read here for a starter. do more research through books or profiles on google. I'm begging you now to not do this till you research properly. I don't think 3 is enough if you get them young. And stores always get them young.

By what you are asking and saying about your setups i strongly disagree with you getting discus. First off discus should be kept in a tank of 75 gallons or more. Second you should not get discus until you can afford at least 6 of them. I originally started with six discus until two of them paired off and i sold the rest. I keep just my breeding pair in a 55 with some rams and tetras and i feel that is still pushing it. I recommend you do angels instead as they are alot more hardy and better suited for your set ups. And if you do get discus you should be doing 50% water changes at least once a week with a 75% RO to 25% tap. Make sure that you test the water (i.e PH GH KH ect.). Also i recommend getting a good quality canister filter and keep the water at 82-86 degrees for discus. Good luck :good:

I have a 65 Gallon tank (250.3L) I have always wanted to keep discus and if its at the cost of getting six, SOLD to me. It is actually quite a new tank, it will be well planted and i will maintain as best i can. It will be the only fish in the tank nut i might get some neons. But if you what you say is true then I would rather not risk it, I read the forum and my tank seems fine, tell me now, yes or no if no i wont keep discus

I agree on getting angels instead of discus as well. I dunno if the 75 gallon thing is true, but seeing how discus get 10 or so inches long, it seems like having a 75 with the greater width would be beneficial.

I don't mean to sound rude, but it really seems to me like you're jumping the gun here, trying to fly when you're just starting to leap.

Even if you do have 3 years of fish keeping experience, and claim to be good with cichlids, you don't seem to know anything about cichlids. You got 2 firemouths and you didn't even know what to do with those for the longest time.

And what happens if you do go out and by 6 $60 fish, and they all die on you? That's 360 dollars and 6 lives down the drain. I know very little people, none the less people who are 12 years old, who are willing to sacrifice that on merely wanting to "experiment"
