Was originally going to only have 3 different fish in my 70 uk gal tank but now thinking more towards a mixed bag!

Any definate no no's I should know about?

A rough guide of what I like = Silver Dollar, Bala Shark, Clown Loach, Flying Fox, Zebra Plec & others.......

:S

i dont know much about uk gallons but i know bala sharks get like 16" or somthin like that :/

dont know about the other fish

but good luck with your tank

Silver Dollars, Bala Sharks and to a lesser degree Clown Loach all get seriously big.
70g isn't big enough for balas, and is pushing it for SDs.

Zebra plecs are almost impossible to find and will cost upwards of £100 each if you do find any.

Bala sharks need a 125 gallon minnimum and a group of 3 min. Clown loaches will eventualy require a 90 gallon and again, should be in a group of 3 at least. Zebra plecs aren't good at competeing for food but otherwise would be suitable though sometimes fragile. Flying foxes are great too, very active and will eat algae but they don't like others of their own kind so either keep a single one (prefferably) or a big group to spread out aggression (at least 6). Silver dollars would work just about but they are schooling fish so you should get at least 6 and they will decimate any plants. Basically, out of the fish you mentioned silver dollars, zebra plecs or a flying fox could work. Honestly, if you want zebra plecs, make it a peaceful planted community and a flying fox could go in as well. If you want silver dollars, make a tank especialy for them - maybe some kind of catfish as well - and don't include any real plants.

edit: spelling

Zebra Plec.....Start Price 99p....Ends 14-May-05 19:45:00 BST
Expect this to rise quite a bit (unless local pickup puts bidders off)
These have been going for £50 recently on eBay.
(no I'm not the seller)

Zebra plecs are difficult to keep even if you can get hold of them; they need to be kept in groups of at least 4-5 and need a varied diet and cannot compete for food very well at all so any fish that eat the same food as them aren't very good.
You will need to put a cave for every plec in the tank for it to sleep/shelter in plus a spare one for every 3plecs you get and have nice open areas with sand substrate too; they are not very hardy fish at all and need to have the exact ph/kh/gh etc to survive well.

Since the exportation of zebra plecs has now been banned from Brazil and the species is set to be made extinct by the construction of a hydro-electric dam in their breeding grounds only experienced hobbiests with the intention of captive breeding them should buy them. They are not good community fish and require specialist care to thrive.
