What are some community friendly African fish?
I am just wondering?

Cichlid:

Usually should be kept with cichlids only due to their aggressive nature. Yellow Labs are pretty mellow though.

Non-Cichlid:
Congo Tetra
African Red Eye Tetra
Congo Barb
African Banded Barb
Most of the Microctenopoma species.

rift valley african cichlids can not be kept long term in a general community tank, aggression aside, they require a very high pH and very hard water which 99% of general community fish wont tolerate, or may tolerate but will have their life spans drastically shortened from it.

However, some cichlids such as kribensis don't need the high pH. They are generally okay in community tanks, but will eat smaller fish such as neon tetras and will get very aggressive during spawning.

There are many species of dwarf cichlid from the Congo river that make great community fish. Nanachromis, A. thomasi, Pelvachromis. I'm sure there are more, these are just the three I can think of.

I always tend towards the rift lakes.. you make a great point, and as another stated here to me "not covered in glitter or rainbows", best quote I've seen in a long time!! but those are great fish in themselves and to be considered ..
