Hey, I'm having a bit of an algae problem in my 55G, so I'm wondering if I can add one or maybe even a few just to take care of it? I know they grow huge, and I'm a big supporter of "Don't buy it unless you can keep it permanently."
But, sometimes rules can be bent.
Now the only question I'm asking is will a 5-6" commen plec be ok? I've had a 3 inch clown plec get its eye pulled out( ) by these guys, but the plec was small.
I dunno when I'll be near a LFS, but since there's one who has a bit of fish, and buys more fish than they ever sell, I bet I could get a deal to take it off their hands :sly:

So will it be ok with a few cichlids?(in my profile, not exactly sure what each fish is though, those are 'educated guesses.'

Thanks - ;)
PS: remeber, I only asked will it survive physically. That's all I'm asking.
I don't want any negative responses...I don't think I'm favored much in the Cichlid section

they should be i have 2 3" pleco in with my african cichlids. No troubles here they even hide in the cave with the cichlids.

I had about an 8 inch pleco in a tank with some africans. The africans beat the crap out of him and ripped up his fins within a few days. The Fish was removed and isolated but eventually lost.

These africans are all juvi, and none of them are bigger than 4"

Well, the answer is maybe. Plain and tough skinned plecos seem to do ok, but I've also heard of them getting pecked at by the mbuna, since they can squeeze into any hiding spot he can.

Yeah they wont bother him unless the fish feel they are being removed from there territory and i believe the pleco knows no better. Well your best off trying and if the fish dont approve then remove the pleco and return the fish.

Alright, bought a "Large Plec".
He's a common plec...He's large, and he's not even been touched since entered the tank!

Your Plec should be fine as your Mbuna are juveniles and he is currently much bigger than them. I added my sailfin Plec to my Mbuna tank when they were very small and he was already around 6 inches. He gets the odd nip now the Mbuna are fully grown but they know not to mess with him as he'll chase them around the tank if they annoy him too much.

Good luck with that like i said i have been unsucessfull with plecos. Maybe my fish just arent very welcoming. He was nipped at and his fins were torn up. He then got sick and killed about 10 fish. Haha it was his way of getting back at them.
