Hi everyone,

I am still plowing along on the Hybrid Livebearer article (Sometimes I wonder why I agreed to do this.. :p ), but I am a little stuck. We're are doing a basic species list so people can see who can breed with who easily. We are only listing the most common fish, otherwise the list would be huge, so in your opinions, what are the most common Goodeidae? Have you seen any for sale, do you know what you can get easily (Or easier then certain others)?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, as the last thing we are waiting on is the Goodeidae list. :)

Thanks!

Hi there,

As you may know, many species of goodeid are threatened with extinction in their natural habitats. This means that you don't see them often in shops but they are common in Zoos and Public Aquaria who have breeding projects for endangered species - I've seen various species at London Zoo, Bristol Zoo and the London Aquarium.

Anyway, to the point, the goodeid that is most commonly turning up in shops at the mo. seems to be the Orange Tailed Goodeid, Xenotoca eiseni.

Another fairly 'common' (for Goodeids) species is the Butterfly Goodeid, Ameca Splendens, and the Rainbow Goodeid, Characodon lateralis, sometimes turns up but this is usually pretty expensive (like £25 a pair).

This is in the UK - I'm not sure but Goodeids might be more common in the US seeing as most of them are from Mexico.

I hope this helps.

Luke.

Thanks funkybodal, that helps a lot. I'll just stick those three species in, and get Toxis's part, and then post it.

Thanks again! :D
