Hey,

i am Planning/Starting my Brackish Set up.

This is Plans So Far.

Tank
Size:
5x2x2 (60x24x24), Aprox 540L.

Filtration:
2x Fluval 405 Cannister Filter (one each end, for Current and good water circulation, movement and filtration)

Heaters:
2x Fluval 300W

Stocking:
3x Columbian Sharks
4x Reedfish

Water
Salt:
2 tablespoons of marine salt per gallon of water. Every 6 months adding an additional tablespoon of salt per gallon of water during water changes. Stopping when im adding about 7 tablespoons of salt per gallon of water or when your hydrometer measures a reading of 1.020-1.025. process taking 3-4 years (as Columbians Mature)

PH:
7.5-8.5 (Idealy around 8)

Temp:
26oC (wich is around 80-82F i think).

I have A Few Questions while im here:

Q1: Can Gibbiceps Pleco's Be Kept in Brackish water (this set up) or purely Fresh Water?
Q2: if Q2 no, then What Pleco's or Aglae eaters are there for brackish water that grow big enough not to be eaten by the columbians but small enough not to over stock the tank? (pleco Preferd)
Q3: What you Guys think? :D

Feedback + and - Always Welcome. :)

Cheers Thanks Bye

i nearly got a colombian shark, when i first started keeping fish, glad i didn't at the time but if i ever got a chance to set up another tank you know what would be in there.

also it may cheaper just to run one filter eg. fx5 instead of two 405's. unless of coarse you already have the filters.

While it is true reedfish/ropefish tolerate slightly brackish water conditions, up to around SG 1.003 at 25 C, they will not accept the medium to high salinities Colombian shark catfish require.

Reedfish are gregarious, and Colombian shark catfish are schooling fish. So, concentrate on keeping the right number of one species in the right water conditions. Colombian sharks are lovely fish, and mix with all sorts of stuff. They are particularly nice kept with marine community fish like damsels, snappers, and groupers so you might want to think about creating a tank that could be upgraded to marine conditions easily, should you want to.

Cheers, Neale

i think you should keep the two filtersd your columbian sharks will benifit from the extra water movement
