My wife and I like having the light on in our tank so we can see the pretty scene within, but of course we don't want to have it on too much and encourage algae attack. I had an idea to maybe have a removable coloured filter, like a lighting gel, perhaps of a deep blue colour, which we could use when the tank has already had enough "normal" light in the day, to provide an attractive method of keeping the tank viewable without overdoing the light. But I had some questions:
Will the fish be distressed by coloured lighting?
Will a blue gel at reduced levels still provide enough light that algae could use it? I don't know what part of the spectrum is most useful to them and I had a feeling it was the red end, but not sure.

A moon light may be an option? normal lights turned off in the evening and moon lights turned on. looks really good in a dark room, im guessing fish dont care about coloured light (may be wrong).

Cheap on ebay too. i bought a blue LED strip for my marine tank, costs a tenner and was easy to fit. :good:

Thanks for the suggestion! I didn't know those existed - have ordered one which should create the effect I'm after :)
