I have seen some food in the LFS which is "colour enhancing" flakes, suitable for small tropical fish. Do these things work, or is it just snake oil advertising? Will it still provide good nutrition to the fish? Do you have to feed them nothing but that for 3 months to notice an almost imperceptible difference?

It does help to an extent, they two things generally added to enhance colour are Spirulina and Carotins (sp) for the orange/red colouration etc.

JBL NovoColour and Tetra Pro Colour are both very good foods and makes very good staple foods as well as they have been designed as a normal staple food with the addition of colour enhancing properties.

It never hurts to mix up foods at all and makes life more interesting for the fish!

I used to use an airtight tupperware tub and buy several different pots of fish food and mix them all together and then using a smaller pot fills from this tub, i would feed the fish a nice mix!

My favourite mix ended up being:

Tetra Pro Colour (for the colour properties)
Tetra Pro Veg (for the herbivourous fish like livebearers etc)
JBL NovoColour/Gala (general high end flake and varied between the two)
Hikari Micropellets (they sank slowly for the shyer tetras)
New Life Spectrum 'Thera A' (garlic enhanced micro pellets to help reduce internal parasites)

I also had bags of other foods knocking about like New Era Pellets as a treat, NovoTabs or NovoFect to stick to the glass or drop in, Plec wafers, frozen foods etc.

Fish love to have different foods, imagine eating the same old stuff day in and day out

EDIT: Forgot to add, colour enhancing foods are just that, they enhance the colours if used regularly as part of the diet. They dont create colour in fish that have none, nor to they create permanent colour in fish, if you stop feeding it, their colours will fade over time.

Same as the colour fed orange budgies (the birds!), if you stop feeding the colur enhancing foods, they will just revert back to normal colours.
