Hello, this is my first post, but I have been reading the rest of the very helpful forum.

I have a small(ish) tank - 90l, and I have 2 Ancistrus. I don't know exactly which ones so maybe you could help with an ID.

I came home the other day to find that the two ancistrus, we think we have a male and a female, looked like part of it had been 'peeled' like a really sore patch.

Today they looked fine, proper colouration, but all of a sudden they lost the markings and looked raw again, yet later they looked fine.

I've taken a couple of pictures of them, but only managed to get one of each, the colour / marking change is the same for both.

The pictures are the best I can do at the moment, not used to photographing into an aquarium and they wont keep still for very long.

Many thanks

Thanks, but have you got any idea about the coluration / pattern changes?
Water stats Ammonia 0, Nitrate 0, Nitrite 0, pH 7.5, 26-27ºC

cheers

not uncommon amongst may fish, plecos too. its often a sign of stress, either through environment, illness or other tank mates.

the first one looks like a young gibbiceps and the other looks like an orange spotted peckoltia.

The grey patching can be excess mucous caused by stress (poor water quality or chemicals). It can also be normal colouration on gibbiceps and common plecostomus.

they are both common bn's ....as colin said could be due 2 stress or bad water quality....have they got plenty of hiding spaces ? whats the other tanks m8's

They have plenty of hiding spaces, they tuck themselves in amongst the plants, round the rocks and behind the filters, also in the artificial tree/cave.

Other tank mates are
5 Silvertip Tetra
4 Serpae Tetra
10 Neon Tetra
2 Clown Loach
4 female / 1 male guppy

Ah, well thanks for that, it could be the clowns, they share a lot of the same hiding places as the BNs. Might see if I can create a second hiding spot for them.
