So i got a new guppy a couple of weeks ago and i was sitting here staring at him (which is what you usually do when you get a new fish  ) and i was just admiring how pretty he was. he had pinkish and yellow stripes on him with a lyre tail and then all of a sudden the blue dot on his side turned into a huge blue stripe and the fin on top turned dark blue also. and i was like am i seeing things?! but it seems that whenever he tried to get a female's attention his color changes like this. has anyone else seen this with their guppies? because i have never seen it with my other males, their coloring stays the same. i will put pictures up of the two different colors if possible.. i don't really know when he will change :ninja:

this one is before he changes color.

sorry they're so blurry this fish is just so darn fast!!

Hmmm . . . I can see the picture of after he changes color, but not the before. I've noticed my guppies colors become brighter depending on how I feed them and how I keep the water, but I've never noticed them changing when they are trying to get the attention of the other females. I have noticed the females tails change color after they drop fry (become paler) and then they are back to their bright colors in a day or two.

Your guppy is gorgeous, though! :D

Edit: Okay, I can see the before picture now, but it's kind of blurry.

yeah it was the strangest thing! he changes color on command (well his command). this has never happened with any of my other guppies. it's interesting because you can watch him and actually see him do it. and thanks, he is a beauty

LOL, maybe he's got a bit of chameleon in him! :D

I don't think it's a bad thing though, so enjoy it. I wish mine would change color like that! :)

This can be from poor nutrition. A fish cant get all the nutrients it needs from a single food source. Fish need lipids, carbohydrates, protein, vitamins, and minerals. Therefor you need to feed a variety of foods. The use of supplemental diet, staple diet, and vitamin and nutritional supplements as a fish needs will ensure that your fish receives all the nutrients necessary for good health. You may not know but fish enjoy a spectrum of tastes and textures. The variety of the food will enhance the quality of their lives.

From a book I read it had this list

Benefits of Quality Foods and Vitamins

- Healthier fish
- Reduced need for medications
- Enhanced colors
- More active fish

Sometimes color changes are due to the angle of which its reflecting the light. About lipids, live food are a great source of lipids because most cell membranes are made of a phospholipid bilayer
