Hi,
I was planning on keeping discus but my parents said im not allowed tropical fish as i plan to buy a 4-5ft aquarium and they dont want to pay a huge heating bill as i already do on my 15gallon aquarium. I would like to put it out in my garage and it can get down to 0 degrees sometimes, i would like to keep big fish like discus, so im not sure about goldfish or minnows, could i keep a giant gourami? or something similar, oscars? i would prefer a giant gourami as i think there amazing!, but will they with stand the coldness, if not, how could i heat it up without spending so much money on it :)
Thank you
Mike

Hello, definate now to anything tropical like oscars, gaint gourami will get too big for a four or five foot, you very limited to what you could keep in that if temp drops to 0.....Even sub tropical species that do not require heating like Dwarf snakehads still need a minimum temp around 15c, If your suffering with issues about heating then you will have to forget it basically, even trying to heat a tank in that sort of cold will be exspensive, if you could heat up the room, this would atleast keep the cost down, for example keeping the tank indoors..
But as said stay well away from Discus/oscars/gourami etc

though if you can keep the tank indoors so it doesn't get quite so cold you could look at paradise fish and rosy barbs- thats what I've got in my unheated one, though they're not actually that big- they can grow to just over 4" each. Then there a few corydoras catfish that prefure cooler temperatures, then again, they too, arn't that big.

All these still need some heat so they would only work if kept indoors but they don't need a heater. Hope that helps a bit.
