Hey everyone,

Pick a tank up on Saturday (hopefully) and supposed to pick up fish.

The problem I have is I have no way of transporting the water from tank to the new home it will have at ours in the tank.

It's 800 litres (175gallons) so not easily done!

Is anyone or does anyone know anyone that could possibly help with this situation?

The only way I see how I'm to get around this is to store the fish at another location while I cycle the tank and then add fish slowly?

Any suggestions, hints, ideas or even miracles would be welcome :)

Ben

It sounds as though you are collecting an existing tank, complete with fish - in which case it should have a filter too. Make sure you keep the filter media wet, in a plastic bag or similar, as you will be doing with the fish, and throw the rest of the water away.

When you get home, fill up with new water using warm water at roughly the right temperature (don't forget the dechlorinator), set up the filter with its media and switch it on, get the heater on (assuming it's tropical), and when the water is about right, float the fish bags, just as you would if you'd bought the fish new.

The filter bacteria will have survived more or less intact, thus no need to cycle.

That would be my thoughts too. The water isn't strictly speaking part of the Cycled process, its what's in the filter / the gravel / on the decorations that helps 'establish' the tank. The more you can keep wet during the process the better, bacteria starts to die off fairly quickly once dry but should survive without too serious an impact for a few hours.

The ammonia munchers don't really die off, as such, they go dormant.

I was going to transfer tankwater to my new tanks when I set them up but after thinking about it a bit more I couldn't see why it would be necessary and so transferred the fish straight into tanks with new water (dechlorinated) and old filters.  The fish seem very happy with this.
