Coconut Shell Decoration - Safe To Use?

erm...the questions in the title really!!! is a coconut shell safe for FW fish - want to use one as a cave and its a cheaper alternative to shop decorations which are far too expensive in my opinion. any other ideas welcomed!!
 
Buy them? better yet, make them ;)

Buy a coconut, saw it in half, scrape the flesh out, cut a hole big enough to let your fish in and out, then boil it for a while to kill any nasty bugs + it will also remove some of the tannins and reduce the brown staining that happens to your water.

I made one for my tank and then attached some plants to it, it looks great. I did have to boil it for a good 5-6 hours though! Be sure to use a pot that you don't care about as it will stain it brown.
 
Just cut it open take out the coconut meat and clean it out good and you should be fine i think!
