I'm looking for black sand for cheapsies, and one forum I found suggested blasting sand. I have a few questions about it though. The grit is a fine blend, black, made from coal slag. The produce details say it contains less than one percent of crystalline free silica.

This sand would go in my ten gallon with (eventually) a male betta. It currently holds one female betta who is recovering from an injury. It's currently bare bottom.

So what do you think? Is it safe? It's only $8 for a 50 pound bag.

Included is the link to the product from my local tractor supply company.

I use this exact product in all 3 of my fish tanks and really like it - and my plants seem to love it too. I have noticed no ill effects and it washed REALLY easily.

I don't know if I'd use it.
Why wouldn't you? Can you please extrapolate?

Do you? Interesting. The ten gallon it would fill also has plants. I imagine that because it is so fine it would be easy on fish with barbels (but I'm not really considering any fish except for a betta or maybe some dwarf corydoras).

If you have a look through my tanks you'll see I keep corydoras in my 20 gallon with this substrate and bettas in my 10 with this substrate - one of my bettas is older and rests on the bottom a lot and he seems to be fine with it! My corydoras love it.
