CO2 Ladder

Could be a bad mixture. :dunno: Seems like you've got more O2 than CO2 coming out.

If there isn't any improvement by tomorrow, it might be worth changing it.

Good luck!

ok, ill test tomorrow night.... shall i do the same mixture? the bubble are about 8mm round - and no smaller at the top when they come out :-(

The mixture I use is, fill to bottom mark with sugar, 1 tsp bi-carb, just less than 1/4 tsp yeast. Fill to top mark with lukewarm water ( similar temp to tank water is ok ) and give it a good stir.

Is that similar to your mix?

no... its sugar to bottom as you said, then 2.5ml of yeast and 1/4 teaspoon of bi-carb.

thats quite different to yours

theres no water movement much around the ladder as its behind a load of vallis - could that be anything to do with it?

the only other place it could go is next to the filter outlet where the water comes out.

Yeasts are all different. I have a fast acting bread yeast, that's why I don't use as much. You could always try a bit more bi-carb if you like. Make sure the water you use isn't too hot. It can effect the yeast I believe.

Not sure if water movement makes any difference. I wouldn't have thought so though. Maybe someone else can answer that.

ill test tomorrow, then do another mixture and see what happens if its the same. can i keep you posted and see if you can recomend anything after ive done all that?

if youve got bubbles coming out - it'll be CO2 - the mix will not produce any thing else ;)

I thing it might be thw water movement - try getting a bit move movement past the ladder.

when you say "my pipe is in the middle outlet on the ladder" I'm confused - the ladder only has one inlet - at the bottom of the ladder...

i could move the ladder to where the water comes out of the pump in the corner (its a rekord 60). then we'd be sure it was moving around. theres no movement at all around the ladder due to the vallis.

sorry about the outlet - it was confusing reading it back. what i mean is on the ladder there are three positions where the pipe can go to let the bubble out: 1 at the top, on half way down, and one at the bottom. i have it in the middle one which is recomended for my tank size, but the bubble dont get any smaller.

shall i move it to where the water comes out of the pump? there is a little surface movement i can;t prevent - but this wont cancel it out will it?

No, it's not a mistake. The ladder needs to be cleaned from time to time. This could be why the bubbles are flying up the ladder though. I've noticed before when I have cleaned my ladders the bubbles have shot up to the top too quick. Maybe the ladder just needs to develop a film on it again?

I can think of only two reasons why bubbles would fly up the ladder quickly. One is from a new mix, when the trapped air in the tube and canister have to be forced out by the CO2. The other would be a cleaned ladder.

Is there any improvement today?

none at all - teh bubble are flying straight up avoiding the latter. something's wrong so im going to do a new mix and move it to where i can see it clearly.... just by the pump outlet.

2.5ml yeast, 5ml bicarb of soda and sugar as normal.

fingers crossed :(

hi sime, just read the thread.

you need to have the pipe outlet at the bottom of the ladder. ignore the recommendations, you wont ever overload the tank with co2 (not with the current mix anyway.)

the bubbles will rise fast when just cleaned, let the ladder build up a bit of grime.

if the bubbles are missing the ladder it isn't 100% vertical. make sure it is and your problems should be sorted.

if it still doesn't work PM me again and i'll see if i can help further.

James

ps: make sure the water isn't above 35 celcius, Yeast is an organic enzyme which is broken down at 40-45 celcius. hot water will literally "kill" the yeast.
