Co2 Canisters

I received the Deltec CO2 system today, everything seems fine and I can convert it to refillables for about £10! Quality seems great although I can add more when its ran....

So if I was to buy that CO2 kit for £67.17, then I could just use any CO2 fire extinguisher with it? Which I could then fill up at BOC (if i have such a place around me)?

No sorry if I have confused you. BOC sell stroke/rent CO2 cylinders which they will refill. As Sam warned they will probably not refill anything else. If you bought a fire extingusher then you would need to find an fire extigushier outlet to refill it. There are BOCs all over the country and their website will direct you to your local one. If you are interested I will let you know their pricing once I work it out.

Cheers for all the support people good to have someone to support you.

So I would buy that German kit, then go to BOC and buy a CO2 fire extinguisher from them which I could also get refilled there when it runs out? The fire extinguisher from BOC would work with the German kit without any modifications?
And I could use any other CO2 fire extinguisher not made by BOC but I would have to find somewhere else to refill it?
Right ? :S

BOC sell CO2 Cylinders.... NOT fire extinguishers.
If you get a fire extinguisher then you need to find a specilist to re-fill it,
if you get a cylinder you just take it back to where you bought it and have it refilled there

i cant believe nobody thought of this yet. buy a 20 oz paintball co2 tank or something. costs like 5 bucks to refill, and you can refill it at any sporting good store. all you need is a neede valve and a regulator if you really want one. if you ever give up on your tank, you can always use it for paintball :good:

My 2KG (that's about 70 oz) fire extinguisher cost me £15, and £15 for each refill. About the same cost, but over 3 times the gas, so it lasts far longer.

if you ever give up on your tank, you can always use it for paintball :good:
And if I ever give it up, I can re-attach the horn and put a fire out with it

Just to throw a spanner in the works, Im fairly sure BOC only rent their cylinders around 4quid a month if I remember rightly. Not 100% sure how it works for fire extinguishers, but I know (cos I phoned them) that Chubb only refill chubb cylinders and again they rent them not sell.

Ive just got another 12lb pub cylinder so I dont have to refill it so often, but it is big, no hiding it in the tank cabinet!

Sam

Yeah as stated above BOC appears to be pretty expensive now I have got all the info through. The women on the phone very kindly gave us the prices without VAT knowing we were a private seller  So with VAT it works out around £60 an year to rent ( or 5.50 a month) and a £10 refill charge plus a £12 collection charge. The smallest bottle they do is 6kg and nearly a meter tall so not very practicle. I will have to keep looking, going to try some fire extingushier places soon.

Out of interest where did you get the pub cylinder did you buy it or just get it off a friend who owns a pub or similar I can find very little about them.

I very very fortunately found a local independent welding shop. If you do a swap refill its £34 but I actually bought this one for £58.57. I was looking at getting a second hand one on ebay buy with the petrol for picking it up it worked out about the same. No rental costs :D

But I reckon it'll last well over 3 years by my calculations.

If you can find a non-rental fire extinguisher place then that probably works out cheapest and easiest.

Sam

One thing to remember if buying a second hand cylinder or renting one, is the date of the pressure test.
AFAIK tanks are usually good for 10 years from date of manufacture, this date and the date of the last
test (if different from manufacture date) should be stampped into the tank, somewhere near the top.

If you believe your tank will last over 3 years, make sure there is a sufficient amount of time left, or when you come to refill it, most places won't touch it ....... and pressure tests cost enough that for a Fire extinguisher it would be cheaper to get a new one than pay for a retest !

Always worth asking your supplier what the date of the last pressure test was when getting a tank !

Cheers mate will do, when you stay stamped do you mean in ink or engaraved into the metal?

Manufacture date should be actually stamped into the metal. I believe it should actually be on all pressurised gas canisters.
They on Co2 fire extinguishers and are even on 500g JBl bottles, you'll usually find it toward the top/neck of the tank .... Somtimes the date format varies 03/06 or 03/2006 etc and can be a little hard to see, especially on older bottles. You'll probably also find the max pressure it can be charged to stamped on there, plus a few other bits that I cant remember now. The guy who supplies and refills my extinguishers pointed it out to me.

Just had a look, there are labels on it that say 'please do not remove' and a date on them assume thats it. However there are three! will take the longest one, which says 6/04/26, which would fit with it being tested just before I got it, as I got it last oct time if I remember rightly. Will see what my other one says.

I get my CO2 bottle from the local soft drink and beer supplier. There are plenty of them around as they supply the pubs and clubs with drinks and almost certainly with CO2 as well. As it goes I just got a refill today on a 6.35kg bottle for £15+vat. Took less than 15 minutes to get there and back home with a full bottle. They are very fussy though and stipulate that they will only refill bottles that they have supplied you with.
