i'm looking to get a pleco in the next year (after i have big enough tnak set up that is....). i want a four inch one and have been looking at queen arabesques, zebras, leopard frog, and clown. i've narrowed it down to the clown for now, namely for cost purposed (a q.a is $69, a leopard frog is $80, and the lfs that sells them said that when they do finally get zebras in they'll be between $100 and $125, but the clown will only be aroudn $30). i was reading on planetcatfish that they (clown plecs) are wood eaters. will the "driftwood" decor that lfs sell be okay for them to eat? what else can i feed him to supplement that diet? i plan to put wood in the tank as decor anyway, but if hes going to eat off it....................
any advice greatly appreicated/

I have a clown plec and he is always on the wood, I have a couple of peices of bogwood in my tank and he loves it, although they do eat it you dont notice the wood 'disapearing' or anything so you wont come into the room one morning and find your decor gone!! :)

they are lovely fish but you dont see them very often

he also loves plec pellets and catfish pellets!!

thanks losi!!! my lfs said they also request some since thats one that sells well, so i'm not too worried about finding one, just have to wait a bit as the lfs informed me that the dry season is ending so they will start collecting them soon and the lfs should have a shipment in the next couple of months. yay. :)

I would agree with Losi about not seeing them often, as they are VERY shy fish....Well mine are. So much so, that I have to search the caves of my tank every day to make sure they are still in it!!

WIth regards to eating wood, I've read that it helps them digest their food, although, like above, I never see them eat, so I'm not too sure what they eat, although I've tried Courgettes (Zuchini??), cucumber, pellets (as per Losi's reply), as well as normal food...Maybe one day they'll come out to play. :D

Good luck when you get one, as they are great looking fish.
