Hi

I was wondering more about clown loaches. I plan on getting one for my 10 gallon tank and was wondering the costs of them. I went to a pet store and they were 17 dollars plus tax, which seemed a little high, or is this about the right price? Also are they good enough to be an algae eater for a 10 gallon tank alone, just 1? Do they require any special attention?

Thanks!

I see Clowns from $7-9 around here. $17 sounds a little high! I don't think they need any sort of special attention.

Clown loach need to be in groups of three or more to be happy and also get rather large. 10 gallons isn't big enough for one, and certainly nt big enough for three!

Try a smaller loach species such as the chain loach or yoyo loach - these also need groups to be happy.

Clown loaches get way too big for ten gallons. They get a foot long. And they need to be in groups of 3 or more, cause they are a schooling fish. They should only be about 6 bucks. They are susceptible to ich and other diseases, definitely not for the beginning aquarist.

 whoa this is the first thread ive seen prices of fish from around the world. Here in the philippines clown loaches cost around 150Php max at 60 Pesos to the dollar thats... errr *maths* *maths* $2.5 each ? and ive seen some at around 80php. Clown loaches are good snail eaters not algao eaters right ?

No they don't eat algae as they are not suckers. They are excellent at getting rid of snails.

I just want to re-emphasize that

1) Clown loaches need to be in groups of at least three.
2) Clown loaches get far too large to live in a ten gallon tank, except maybe as very young fish.
3) Clown loaches are not algea eaters.

For a 10 gallon tank, Otos would be a good algae eater, and they stay small enough to live happily in 10 gallon tank.

Umm basically you just repeated exactly what I said in slightly different words... what was the point of that other than to spam and raise your post count? You're not really giving any new valuable info and you're cluttering up the topic...

Uhm, first off I did say I was RE-emphasize what was already said, so I didn't take credit for your information. And secondly, I added to the topic a suggestion for a different fish he could get as an algae eater, which I noted that you did not bother to do. This stikes me as "valuable info".

Maybe you should check your posts and read all of what others say before you go accusing them of "spamming" and "increasing post counts".

Furthermore, isn't it ironic that your latest post here offered no new information as it relates to the topic? Seems to me that you are guilty of what you wrongly accused me of.

Well ok I am not about to get into another fight... everyone is entitled to their opinion as you to yours. All I have to say is, what is the point of "re-emphasizing" what has already been said? If you wanted to suggest otos, then you could have come right out and done it without parroting back what I had already stated in previous posts.

And kevin... I was not spamming at all when we got into our fight... I was simply stating my opinion and experience on keeping discus, which got me into an argument with cheese specialist, which you eventually became involved in (no idea how) Oh yeah I think you said cheese "owned" me. :p

the larger the clown, the more valuable they are. Here in Vancouver Canada a small guy around 1-2 inches goes for $8. Around 3 inches they go up to $16. And around the 4 inch mark they are $50.

Well, that makes total sense. You live in the philipines and are VERY close to where they live in the wild. Sumatra and Borneo are their natural habitat. Its the importing fees we are paying for.

Hi,

I'm in Australia, so I work in liters, not gallons, so I have no idea what a 10gallon looks like. I have a 180L / 4ft tank with 4 clown loaches.

I originally had 2, and they were very inactive untill I got 2 more, so I support the schooling theory.

They are a one of the best fish to have, they are not named 'clown' for nothing!

They do like clean, aerated water, are prone to ick & are sensitive to meds (usually u have to half the dosage not to harm them).

As for the size, yes they do grow to 24cm +, but also consider their life span of 15yrs. They won't get to their max size for a long time, and I think most fish shops would happily exchange a large fish for a smaller one if it outgrows your tank.

PS if you do get some, you will see strange behaviour like them sleeping on their side in the back of the tank - they're not dead, they just sleep like that

Cheers

10 gallons is 40litres :/

David, there is no plec that can go in a 10gallon (other than the oto), otos or shrimp are good options though.

:)
