I have quite cloudy water . I have a tropical fish tank i clean it out once a week. I cleaned it out only 2 days ago and it is still cloudy

Has anyone got any suggestions on how to make it not cloudy??

thanks sarah x

Hi sarah and welcome to TFF!

The members will be along to help you. Meanwhile you can get started answering many of the baseline things they'll need to know:

tanks size
fish/no fish?
plants?
what else is in tank
# days since filled with water
do you have a test kit? what type?
stats of tap water
stats of tank water
how was the tank cycled?

My tank is 30 litres
i have 2 dwarf gouramis
3 zebra danios
2 moliies
1 loach
2 adf
i have 1 java fern
i have a cave and small bridge in tank
I last did a partial water change on sunday

I am not going to comment much on your stocking, but you might be over-stocked?

Anyways, what we need to know to determine why your water is cloudy is you water stats, how did you cycle your tank and how long has you tank been running?

Do you have a test kit? If so, what kind is it?

Based on your water stats, Ammonia, NitrIte, NitrAte and pH, which your test kit will test for, we will be able to help you out a lot more! :good:

A good test kit is the API Freshwater Master Test Kit.

OK Great! That gets us started with the first 4 questions. How about the next 5 questions?
How long since you started the tank and the next 4 Q's after that.

You are overstocked for the tank size, but we'll need to evaluate your filtration somehow to see if it too is oversized and can handle extra fish. The part FHM is talking about, the test kit, is going to be critical, we're going to need water stats.

I dnt think i am over stocked because i asked the fishkeeper in the shop and he said that i could have more but i didnt want any more.

Sarah - not sure if you are still with us or not but just wanted to post a note about your tank.

Yes, your tank is a bit overstocked - don't always rely on what they tell you in your LFS because they are there primarily to make sales. It's always best to do your own research rather than believing everything they tell you. Some are better than others - but if you were told that you could put more fish into that tank then I'd be inclined to think this particular salesperson was not very knowledgeable on tropical fish.

Also, you mentioned you had a "loach" - what type of loach is it? If it is a clown loach then seriously this needs to be returned to the shop because 1) they grow to about a foot long (should never have been sold to you for a 30 litre!) and 2) they need to be with other clown loaches as they are sociable fish needing the company of their own kind.

For now, to keep your ammonia/nitrite levels down in your tank, you should be doing regular (daily or every other day) water changes (not the whole lot - just 25-30%). Don't wash out your filter sponge either - that can be done once a month (give it a sloosh in a little tank water when you do a water change - don't run it under the tap).

The cloudy water is a sign that your filter may not be properly cycled yet and there is an imbalance in the tank bacteria not enough to cope with the amount of fish waste being produced - a reason why a lot of new tank set-ups end up with sick or dead fish (known as "new tank syndrome").

Anyway, hope everything works out ok.

Athena
