Hey guys. I posted about a week ago about my really cloudy tank. I did a water change and it looked perfect. It's been about a week and it's looking alright. It seems to be getting cloudier as the days go by though. I bought water clarifier and added that before I did the water change and it did nothing. Does anyone know how I can prevent this from happening all the time? Any advice would be great.

Thanks!

I would suggest doing maybe a couple extra water changes ontop of your usual weekly ones.
Just wondering hoe much and how often are you doing water changes, tank size, what substrate(ie Gravel?) and what fish do you have in the tank?

Just a couple question to help me help you?

Also what kind of cloudy are we talking about? White Green Brown?

Lately I've been doing water changes about every week cuz of the cloudiness. I have a 20 gallon high tank with 2 Black Moors and a Pleco. I have gravel as substrate. I also recently bought a heater for the water. I know that Moors are cold water fish but my room tends to be very cold so I bought one to keep the water at the right temperature. That wouldn't be causing the cloudiness for any reason would it?

Oh and the cloudiness is a white-ish color.

Thanks

what is your water quality like eg. ammonia reading, what sort of water clarifier did you use. The three most likely causes are ammonia, bacterial bloom or fine particals (ps Plecs can begin to bully fish like fancy goldfish not a mix i would recommened).

My ammonia reading is 0 ppm, and I used TopFin water clarifier. I had to take in my boyfriend's Pleco because I had really bad algae and he didn't have a tank big enough for him. I plan on giving him away soon. He did bully my fish in the beginning but he gets along with them fine now.

What type of filter? For a 20G tank your filter should be moving about 100G/hour I think. Is the ammonia test liquid-based?

If the cloudyness is whiteish it might be sign of a bacterial bloom in the water. Step up your water changes, Do you have a nitrite reading kit aswell? Also are any of the fish showing any sign of sickness?

I don't know off the top of my head how much water my filter puts out in an hour. The ammonia test is liquid based. I don't have a nitrite tester yet but I'm getting there. My fish seem to be doing fine so it's probably just a bacteria bloom. What can I do about this? Anything?

Thanks guys

cut back on feeding dry foods and pellet foods. They will often cause the water to go cloudy, especially if all the food isn't eaten immediately.

I have been cutting back on the feeding. That's probably what caused it. Thanks everyone!

How long has tank been set up for?
And how long have the fish been in there for?
How did you cycle your tank ready for fish?

Did you wash gravel well enough as this can sometimes lead to cloudiness. Bacterial blooms are very common in newly set up tanks and are usually a result of excess ammonia or fluctuating levels of ammonia / nitrite / nitrate / CO2. It takes a number of months before your levels will stablise so you may just have to ride things out for now. Feeding should be once a day, only 6 days a week and only enough that can be completely eaten within a minute. Frozen foods should be fed only once a week with dried flakes and pellets on other days.

jonsey, there you are! haven't seen you since February! Stumbled across your great article with tips on taking fish photos - really a nice piece of work.

Why thankyou :hey:

Been busy last few months and my attention has been focussed away from the world of fish. I blame my new Wii entirely for this. However, I intend to get back to offering witty advice for the forseeable future. Just added a few new plants along with a pearl gourami to my 125litre school tank and I'm feeling all enthusiatic again.
