Hi,

I have cloned tanks before with great sucess, so when I decided to buy another 40l (10g) tank, I thought I would clone again. So I bought a new filter (one that can be used up to a 45l tank) and placed it in my exsisting 15g tank. It has been there for a couple of weeks and I was going to place it, along with some gravel and a fish from the exsisting tank into my new 45l tank. However my hubby bought the tank and decided to buy a 68l tank instead (bless he thought a bigger tank would mean I could have more fish).

My problem is this - If the tank is 68l (15gish) can I still use mature filter that is only meant for a 45l tank? Will this support the fish until the new filter has matured? If so how many fish would I be able to transfer or buy initially? Or will I have to do a fishless cycle?

Any help would be great.

nothing changes really. Your larger tank will still only be able to support the bioload that the small filter can handle. So if you have a ten gallon filter it can handle the equivalent of eight to twelve 1-1.5 inch fish. Once you go larger than this though it does become more of an issue because of the amount of water moved by the smaller filter. Large filters move more water which means they can filter more water more quickly

yea im having to do kinda the same thing.

my new 180G tank comes 2morro and i need to move my oscar straight into it from the 30G tank hes in now.

trouble is the new filter doesnt come till next week but im jus using the filter from the 3ft tank and not adding any more fish till the new filters are sorted.

that way i dont add anymore bio load to to what the filter is already used to and it wil be fine.

for a few days anyway.

Hi,

The new tank has a built in filter so it can't be removed otherwise I would have removed it and set it up in my exsisting 15g until it had the suffient bateria.

My exsisting tank has an ugf so the gravel is the media. My thoughts were that if I set up the new tank, place in it the filter that has already matured (Fluval plus1) and gravel (in a sock) from the exsisiting tank, then that would give the tank some bacteria. Obviously I would only put a few fish in the tank, maybe a few silver tipped tetras, then I would watch the water stats closely and once the new filter has bacteria in it removed the fluval plus1 and stock the tank properly.

Does this sound like a good plan?

If not then I might take tank back and get a smaller one that the filter will be ok for as due to a population explosion I need to re-shuffle fish fairly quickly.

Hi,

I have now sorted my problem. The tank dimensions included the hood, so the actual tank size is only 54L. By the time I have added substrate, rocks and plants the number of litres will have decreased further. Also as well as my mature filter, I am using some substrate from the exsisting tank (ugf so full of bacteria). I think therefore I should be ok.

Many thanks anyway
