i've just picked up a secondhand 220 litre tank which was emptied about a week ago, it's a bit smelly inside with a bit of algae, is there anything i can use to clean the tank out without damaging it ,the place the tank is going is not ready yet so the tank will be empty for about another 3 weeks yet :)

Yeah, I'd start with a bucket of fresh water with maybe a little bit of bleach (1 part in 20), use rubber gloves to protect your hands and those plastic scrubbies that you get for dishwashing (make sure they don't have any soaps in them!) and just work at it with scrubbing and rinsing back and forth many times. Keep an eye out for white mineral deposits on the glass and there are other things you can do if you run into that sometimes difficult problem. (let us know)

Just a very important thing to add to Waterdrop's reply. If you are going to use a dish washing scrubber do NOT use one with a green scourer as this will scratch glass. Use either one with a WHITE scourer or as Waterdrop suggested one of those plastic webbing pads.

all sorted now i did use a white scrubber so no scratches, still i bit wiffey but it's a lot better than it was :thanks:

I spend many more hours using one of those green scrubbers at the kitchen sink than I ever get to spend maintaining the tanks  Thank you dorsey, I shutter to even think of one of those green things touching any of my tanks or the tanks of our members! Even finding plain plastic webbing pads that have no added soaps etc. these days can be a challange. You almost have to taste as well as sniff them in the store

Glad to hear you're sorted talisker, now on to the fishless cycle, right?
