Cleaning Juwel Rekord 70?

There's no need to completely change any sponges ( but if you are treating with meds then do remove the black carbon one as it will stop the meds from working by removing them ) . They last years and despite what the packaging tells you, unless a sponge is literally falling apart there is no need to change it. If you take all the sponges out and replace them you will destroy the biological cycle in the tank. The company only tells you to change the sponges as they are relying on you to know nothing and simply go out and buy more each month. It's a money ploy and nowt more.

Just take out the carbon ( black ) one and replace it with either another white sponge, or if they will fit, some ceramic media ( more surface area for bacteria ) . You also don't need to rinse your sponges every week. Only when the flow starts to slow a bit on the filter, then you should wash one of the sponges like you do currently in a bucket of used tankwater.
Ceramic media?

Sorry thats a real noob question...

Ceramic rings, bio rings they are called, like large ceramic hula-hoops (as I call em )

How do they work?

Could I replace my sponges for them?

BTW Thanks to everyone who has helped me so far, a little update..

I have got the new sponges, changed 20 - 30%, took out the carbon sponge, replaced the white one..

You could replace a couple of the sponges in the filter for the bio rings if you wanted, but to be honest in a juwel, as its nicely set up for the sponges, I wouldnt. They work by growing the bacteria on them same as a sponge, but they dont really need cleaning.

OK thanks, if I ever set up a non - juwel tank then I may give them a go..

And a special thank you to you *minxfishy* because you have helped a lot today :good:

just to add to the thread

juwel are now suppling cirax (ceramic/bio media) with there aquariums thay also do these as a replacement for 1 of the blue sponges or as an extra on the larger tanks

thay do them for the following juwel filters.................

+ Compact, Compact H, Compact Super, Bioflow Super, Bioflow 1.0, Bioflow 1.3
+ Standard, Standard H, Bioflow 6.0
+ Jumbo

iirc the record 70 uses the compact filter. The cirax is around £4 quid and your never need to replace it

the rekord 70 uses a compact super, and the new cirax is only addable to the new tanks as they have a different filter box

There listed for all the juwel inernals (bar the rekord 60) (latest juwel catelouge) can't see them changing the boxes sizes tbh. Even the newer bioflow filters take the same media sponges as the rest of the range only difference with the bioflow boxes is the way the water flows up through the filter. alas the juwel site hasnt been updated in months with the info.

anyhoo there nothing stopping you taking out 1 blue sponge and putting a small bag of ceramic media in its place

edit. Rekord 60 uses the super compact sevice kit has (4 white and 1 carbon) Rekord 70 uses the compact filter iirc the pump set 400 unless it earlier model

oh yes i have setup a juwel 800 myself .lol. it uses the same media tho. lol :good: hoods are much better agreed but then again the prices have gone up so you expect it tbh

never mind hay i dont come here to argue
