Hi guys,

I'm new to the forums. I searched the threads but couldn't find anything regarding this so I decided to post for some help.

I have a Juwel 280GB pump (old style - image attached) for my compact filter system. I inherited the tank and I changed the pump 3 years ago.

Each time I clean out the filters, the pump doesn't pump out water, it usually needs a little bang to get it going. Over the time the pump seems to be pushing out less water. I've tried taking it out and cleaning it the best I can with cotton buds, but no joy.

I expect these pumps should last longer than this, so how should I be maintain the pump? I'm not sure if the grey casing can come off to get access to the main black part and give it a good clean out? Or is it normal to replace these pumps every 3 years?

Thanks in advance for your help, there seems to be a good wealth of knowledge on here, so I hope someone knows about this.

P.S - Please don't shoot me down if there is already a thread (as I did look) or if I've posted in the wrong section.

Sounds as if you have already cleaned the impeller and the cavity it sits in with the cotton buds? These two areas get mucky pretty quickly and reduce the efficiency of Juwel pumps.

Thanks for your advice.

Has anyone else had experience with these pumps?

I've had no experience with these pumps, but they should last far longer than 3 years. If possible, try to open up the casing to get a good look at and around the impeller, as there may be some built up mess slowing it down :good:

This is what I was thinking, but it's not clear if you can and or how you can get the casing off. I don't want to end up breaking it...

Do you mean the Juwel Mini filter, like the one that came with my Korall60? http://www.google.co.uk/search?q=juwel+mini+bioflow+filter&hl=en&prmd=imvns&source=lnms&tbm=isch&ei=ih_KT67lL-jL0QXd2JyzAQ&sa=X&oi=mode_link&ct=mode&cd=2&ved=0CKEBEPwFKAE&biw=1920&bih=1117

If so, there is a section at the top (wher the pump lives) and the bottom (where the single pad lives) that do seperate from the main body, but they are not easy to do by hand. I often use a knife to help prise them apart for sponge and pump maintenance.

No it's not like that. See this link:

but not the 'bioflow' one

So is it the white/grey casing around the pump you are struggling with? That comes off with a gentle prising apart of the open end.

Just in case anyone else has this problem. The pump was fine all along. It was the tube it pumps the water up through. It was blocked. I'd tried many times running water through it etc. I ended up flicking the tube and all this crap came out. Water pumping out normally now! Probably need pipe cleaner for this job.
