Its similar to a stanley blade but stainless and gets algae off without scratching the glass. I hate magnet cleaners for the reasons you have stated. Will probably never use one again.

Rena Algae scraper Its the rena one with plastic and stainless blades I use in the Marine and in my tropical I use the Tetra one at the top. Had bad experiences with the Magnets.

I hate magnets, it does not seem to matter how clean you try to keep them.
