I was wondering if someone would be so kind as to guide me in the right direction. Although i do not plan on doing this for a few weeks, i am looking for a bottom feeder or bottom feeders suitable for my 4 ft long 50 gallon tank.

I do not want to have to buy special pellets for said bottom feeders. I have flake brine and bloodworms.

This is a platy tank. I love platy.

My boyfriend thinks platy are as generic and plain as goldfish so i would like the bottom feeder or feeders to be to his liking. Cool guy fish.

Any suggestions??

Green phantom pleco. Maybe some kind of botia like yo-yo loaches. You can tell him they have little switchblades under their eyes.

Kuhli Loaches :D

I really like the green phantom pleco. But i doubt that will happen unless i see one for fifteen bucks or less lol.

So far its the khuli loaches that i think im going to go with. Plus i could get 4 of them which would be nice. But i do have gravel substrate so i may spare there barbels or what evs.

Any plecos around the same size max that rubbernose/bulldog plecos? I would mostly like a small sized pleco but i like seeing all of the cool options.

If you want kuhlis, they need sand substrate.
You will also need more than 4 if you ever want to see them out and about. 6+ is good, and if you have a lot of plants and driftwood or caves or coconot caves, then they will be out even more.

If not, you will never see them

I can definitely agree with Crossfire on this one when it comes to Kuhlis. She got me on the bandwagon for them, and I have 13 of them. You will never see a more active group of fish. For a 50g, you could actually do a number of things. You could do 8-10 cories with 8-10 kuhlis, with a small plecostomus such as a Bristle nose.

I would love corys. But i have the typical aquarium gravel as substrate. Are they still an option for me?

You could always scoop out the gravel and add cleaned playsand or pure silica sand. You wouldn't even need to take the platies out, but it would be cloudy and full of schmutz for about a day until it settled. :good:

No bottom dwelling fish with whiskers and that sift through sand can happily live in gravel

Well then that knocks out the loaches and the cories  . I guess I will be going with a bulldog pleco. Or if I find a nice steal on a green or blue phantom *fingers crossed*. I will not be changing my substrate.

Thank you everyone for your replies. If anything else comes to mind keep throwin' them at me! I will also continue searching myself and will reply if I ever find something else that fits the bill.

No loaches?

We were so close :C

Oh? Don't loaches have barbels? Can I have loaches in gravel substrate? I would love to get khulis. But I am not changing my substrate.

If I am able to get loaches, I would also like to get upside down cat fish. How many of each should I get for my 50 gallon tank?

Upside down catfish have barbels but they swim up at the top for naturally they swim upside down and wait to eat insects. They also browse under large leaves and sometimes in the substrate. Can I oh please cna I get Khuli laoches and Upside down cats? ?!

Oh, here is a picture of my tank -

I can certainly make more caves, too.
