**edit** I found an article describing what kinds of pots are safe. I assume im going to get terra cotta pots, or ones made of clay, however, I know that pots can break under extreme heat, so I would think boiling them is out of the question, and therefore how would one go about sterilizing them, put them in a freezer overnight? Just rinse with hot tap water?

Clay pots are fine to go in an aquarium, just make sure you was them first (just scrub them in water).

Clay pots get baked in kilns at much higher temperatures than boiling water, it's more a matter of sudden temperature shock that will break the pot. Sticking a dry room temperature pot into either a freezer or hot oven would likely crack it, change the heat gradually. What I would do (and I do this all the time while baking, not a cracked pot yet) is soak the pot in water for an hour or so, then put it in a cold oven and turn the oven up as hot as you'd like. You could easily go up to 500-550 F but I'm sure 350-400 F would be fine.

get some neat bleach (no added scents ect) and mix it in a 20:1 ratio dip the pot into that for a few mins rince well and it will be sterile
