hi everyone=] im a newb here and i think im having some trouble taking care of my friend's siamese fighting fish>_<

ive only had him for 8 days but i've noticed that something might be growing on his head/gills.. and he used to be blue but he seems to be turning green?.. o_O well ill try to fill in all the blanks to give some more detail.>_<

1. Water parameters. (ammonia, nitrate, nitrite, PH, temp', Hardness etc)
im not to sure about the chemical concentration, but the temperature i think should be room temperature

2. A full description of the fishes symptoms.
im not sure if this existed before, because i've only had him a week or so, but he seems to have small white/grey patches growing on his gills and generally in the head area.
he was originally blue and the fin was a dark aqua sort of tone, but i;ve noticed that he looks more green lately. well more so then when i first saw him.>_<

3. How often you do water changes and how much.ive only had him a week so only once, but my friend used to only change it when the tank got smelly, which was about once a week anyway^ ^''.. but he has had fighting fish before, so i trusted him

4. Any chemicals and treatments you add to the water.
when i change the water, i am told to add 6 drops of "splendid betta: complete water conditioner" [sorry, there wasnt any information on the bottle except the name and directions of use>_<]

5. What tank mates are in the tank.
only clarice the fighting fish and his plastic tree

6. Tank size.
the tank is just a small plastic tank from the pet shop. to temperature control or oxygen pumps. its in a weird trapezium like shape but the measurements are approximately:
width: 9 cm
length: 10 cm
height: 11 cm

7. Finally Have you recently added any new fish?
nope, its only ever been him and the plastic tree

please please!! if anyone could share their wisdom and offer a little advice, please tell me what is wrong with clarice the fighting fish!!>_< i dont want him to die!>_<''

thank you so much!!!=]

Is the tank really 9x10x10 cm? or is it inches, cause cm leaves you with a tiny volume which is far from humane to keep any fish in, even a betta. If your tank is really that small thats likely the problem, hes probably suffering from amonia and nitrite poisioning with some sort of fungal infection secondary to his bad conditions.

Since hes not your fish the best you can do is change his water regually, like a 100% change atleast once a day to get rid of the toxins. Best bet is to get a new/fish only bucket that you can keep water in to change the tank with so as to allow the temperature to settle at room temp. and make sure you add a decholination, which it sounds like you are. Try and get some bettafix from the local fish/pet store, it may help with the stress and what ever else is wrong with him.

A Betta can not live a happy life in a tank smaller then 1 Gallon. if you care for this fish's long term survival you really need to get your friend to get him a bigger tank

yep its only 9cm x 10cm x 11cm.. the fishy was actually a gift from me when i bought it for me friend and the pet shop lady actually said the tank was ideal for fighting fish>__<'' lies!!.. but i'll let my friend know to get him a bigger tank.. but how large is one gallon?.. im not to good with measurements, especially gallons.. but should it still be relatively small because i know that they can become stressed and die because they end up having too much territory to cover?

but i will change his water for the time being and hopefully that will get rid of the bacteria. oh poor clarice=(.. but his appetite seems to be very good. im scared im overfeeding him to.

that was another question to>_< am i overfeeding him?..
i feed him 2-3 pellets of "pro balance betta food"..and 2 at night.. so each 12 hr interval. i think it seems like a lot though considering such a little fish but he always seems to be hungry. why is this?

but thank you so much tiggle! thank you for sharing your wisdom!!=] i owe you big time!=] thank you!!!

I feed my boys about the same, 4-5 pellets in the morning and some frozen food at night. And they always want more. I think they're just greedy :p

Im not sure what 1g is in L, my girl is in a 14L and shes quite happy in there. My boys are in a divided tank with about 10L each, though one of them lived in the 14L for a year without any problems. Ive heard people say they can be happy in 10g which is...~40L?

maybe this will help http://www.fishforums.net/index.php?showtopic=10675

well... id better get back to work :*)

lol thats cool=] i was scared i was overfeeding, because i once overheard someone say that their stomach is the size of their eye?.. o_O *shrugs* btu thank you so much for the help!!!.. i just hope my little friend here gets well soon=] thank you!!!=]
